Die sog. Foreign Exchange Certificates der Bank of China wurden 1979 als Ersatzwährung für sich in der Volksrepublik China aufhaltende Ausländer eingeführt. Deng Xiaoping organisierte 1994 die Abschaffung dieses Geldes. Seither können Besucher Chinas alle Leistungen mit dem Renminbi (Yuan) bezahlen, der allerdings weiterhin nur eingeschränkt konvertibel ist und nicht unbegrenzt ausser Landes gebracht werden darf.
