FERDINANDIIDGROIMPSA ETC – 1624 Drapierte, geharnischte Büste Karls V. (type immobilisé) mit Lorbeerkranz, Löwenkopfschulter und Halskrause nach rechts. Rv. Doppeladler in einem runden Medaillon, darauf das Stadtwappen von Besançon. Darüber eine grosse Krone, die den Anfang und Abschluss eines Wappenkreises bildet. Die bekannten Stücke dieser Art sind ein einzigartiger Fall, was deren Herstellung in der Münzstätte Besançon anbelangt. Als münzähnliche Objekte wurden sie ursprünglich an die 14 Gouverneure für ihre wichtige Funktion im Bezug zur städtischen Münzstätte verteilt. Die Kosten für diese Sonderprägungen mussten jeweils von der Stadt beglichen werden. Anfänglich wurden die Stücke lediglich in Silber geprägt und ab 1641 dann in praktisch reinem Gold (23.5 Karat). Sie wurden jährlich jeweils im Mai oder Juni verteilt; jedenfalls immer vor den Stadtratswahlen. Die letzten Stücke wurden im Jahre 1676 geprägt.
Unser Stück ist aber von 1624 datiert. Das heisst, dass es nicht zu den bekannten münzähnlichen Prägungen, die oben erwähnt sind, gehört. Es bleibt nur die Vermutung, dass es sich um einen „Donativ“ handelt, der zu einem besonderen Anlass geprägt wurde. Leider existieren die Unterlagen der Münzstätte für diese Jahre nicht mehr. Es ist aber klar, dass dieses Stück, das nur noch in einem weiteren Exemplar im Münzkabinett Wien existiert, als Vorlage für die Prägungen von 1641 und später diente.

The known pieces of this type are a singular case in the production of the Besançon mint. As coin-like objects these pieces were original distributed among the 14 governors for their important functions in relation to the city mint. The costs were carried by the municipality. Originally they were minted in silver and starting in 1641 in practically pure gold (23.5 carats). They were distributed annually in May or June; in any case always before the city council elections. The last pieces were minted in 1676.
Our piece, however, is dated 1624. That means that it cannot be placed to the coin-like mintings that are mentioned above. The assumption remains, that it was a so called “donation coin” that was minted for a special occasion. Regretfully the archives of the mint for these years are missing. But it is clear that this piece, of which there solely only one other specimen in the Vienna Coin Cabinet exists, was the model on which the issues of 1641 and later are based.
