Gilded bronze medal 1829. Capture of Adrianople. Dies by C. Pfeuffer. Warrior in armour and plumed helmet standing before city gates, holds flag and sword. In background fallen Turkish flag. Rev. 6 line legend. 38,80 g. Diakov 485.1. Smirn. -. Rim nicks. Almost extremely fine.
At the end of the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829 (Greek War of Independence) Russia had captured Adrianople that had been the Ottoman Empire’s capital until the conquest of Constantinople. The Peace of Adrianople was signed here in September of 1829 giving Serbia and Greece autonomy.
