In the course of the Crimean War the Russian port of Sevastopol was besieged by British, French, Turkish and Sardinian forces. The Russian Black Sea fleet had been scuttled in the harbour and the siege was from land forces. It lasted from September 1854 to September 1855. Catastrophic sanitary conditions in the besieger’s camps led to the death by cholera of the French commander-in-chief, the French commander of the fleet and the commander of British forces. In the end, the severe shelling of the Fortress Malakoff led the Russian troops to evacuate the city, leaving a ruin of what had once been one of the most prosperous cities on the Black Sea.
