Pyrrhus, king of the Molossians in Epirus, married Lanassa, daughter of king Agathocles of Syracuse, in 295. In 281 Tarentum asked his aid against the Romans and he landed with an army of 25'000 men in Italy the next year. In 278 the Siceliotes asked his support against Carthage, then an ally of Rome, and Pyrrhus took over the island, acclaimed by all the Greeks as King of Sicily. He defeated the Carthaginians, pushing them back to Lilybaeum. He returned to Italy in 276 and eventually to Epirus.
